The young Cartoonist...
Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois to Elias and Flora Disney. Having no desire to work for his father, Disney had an early fascination with art and convinced his parents to let him enroll in classes at the Kansas City Art Institute. His classmates described him as an entertainer who wanted to make people laugh. During the time of World War I, Disney became an ambulance driver for the Red Cross. He was stationed in France, and soon became the unit's unofficial artist by painting on the sides of the ambulance cabs and camouflaging German helmets to be turned into sniper helmets. In 1919, Disney returned to the US and joined the Kansas City Slide Company making small animations that would play in movie theaters.
